あ is the first character in the Japanese alphabet.
There’s no particular reason why it’s the first letter in the alphabet, in the same way that there is no particular reason that ‘a’ is the first letter in the Latin alphabet, and ‘α’ is the first letter in the Greek alphabet.
The thing that you’ll soon realise with learning hiragana is that there’s no real logic to how the characters look and feel, and you’re essentially learning an arbitrary pattern and associating it with a sound.
